America 250: Coloring Book
Niagara County has published a coloring book recognizing historically significant places throughout Niagara County, in honor of America's 250th birthday. (Wilson Harbor is included on page 20.) Visiting these landmarks would make a great summertime activity for the whole family! Print your copy at https://www.niagaracounty.gov/coloringbook .
Wilson, New York
Wilson is a small, lakeside town located in northern Niagara County, New York, on the shores of Lake Ontario. It’s part of the greater Buffalo–Niagara region and is known for its quiet rural atmosphere, historic harbor, orchards and fishing culture. Established in 1818, the town was named after Reuben Wilson, one of the most prominent pioneers of his time.
The Village of Wilson, incorporated in 1858, is actually located inside the Town of Wilson and is home to Wilson Harbor. Several yacht clubs and marinas support boating life while the lake and streams provide excellent fishing for trout, salmon and bass. The sunsets that are visible from Wilson during the summertime are simply remarkable.
In addition to the harbor, guests will often visit Wilson-Tuscarora State Park, which is a popular place for camping, hiking, picnicking, and swimming. Wilson is also well-known for its agriculture, especially its fruit farms and vineyards. Local crops include apples, cherries, blueberries, strawberries, peaches, pears and grapes.
Both the town and village of Wilson have strong historical roots. The Town was made a Port of Entry in 1848 and for many years, Wilson prospered as a lumber and ship building port. The area was also known for its hearty fruits and vegetables, which were transported by both ship and rail. In the 1890s, the community became well known as a popular resort area, with thousands of visitors arriving daily by passenger steamers from Toronto, Canada.
